Videoconferencing Room

ATLAS provides videoconference services over the internet to all LAS and Illinois departments.

  • Videoconferencing supports real-time synchronous conferencing with both audio and video between any two videoconference-enabled sites on the internet.
  • ATLAS also supports audio conferencing using the Skype service.
  • ATLAS videoconference services are located in rooms G-58 and G-3 Foreign Languages Building.
  • Videoconferencing is available between 9 AM and 5 PM, Monday through Friday.

Cost

  • LAS timetable courses: free
  • LAS department faculty and staff: $35.00/hour for all non-course related university business.
  • Masters or Doctoral defenses in LAS degree programs: free
  • Other Illinois departments: $65/hour

Technical Details

  • The ATLAS videoconference service uses the standard H.323 protocol
  • ATLAS supports both standard definition (SD) and high-definition (HD) video, depending on the capabilities of the remote site.
  • Sharing computer video (such as PowerPoint and web pages) along with camera video is supported using H.239, also known as "DuoVideo."
  • Up to three remote sites may be connected together into a single videoconference using ATLAS's MCU

Requirements

  • To participate in a videoconference the remote participants must also use an H.323 standard compliant videoconference codec appliance. Most colleges and universities provide some type of videoconferencing service, and commercial services are available in most major cities.
  • A remote participant may also connect to a videoconference using a desktop computer equipped with specialized videoconferencing hardware or software. ATLAS cannot provide technical support for remote participants.

Skype

  • ATLAS also supports audio conferencing using the Skype internet telephony service.
  • The ATLAS videoconferencing room has a Skype-compatible speaker phone that eliminates echo and allows multiple people in the same room to participate in a Skype call without wearing headphones.
  • ATLAS cannot provide video conferencing using Skype.
